This calendar week's Workspace Wed is a bit of a hybrid betwixt a workspace characteristic and a studio tour. I love showing off existent life workspaces whenever I have the opportunity, and and then today I am sharing the dwelling office and studio of Kerry McCashin, the paper lover and designer behind One thousand. Batty Design and Stationery. Kerry sells her bill of fare designs and stationery in her online card shop likewise named K. Batty. And I thought she would exist a fun person to interview. Then, I asked Kerry some questions about her shop and her home studio. Hither'due south what Kerry had to say…

-How-do-you-do Kerry! I like to commencement every interview by asking a simple question: In merely a few sentences, how would y'all draw your work?

Make clean, streamlined, classic. My piece of work is often layered with color & graphics, but in my cards I keep them elementary, using lots of white space.

-Yep, y'all practice have a lot of white space. That's 1 of the things I beloved nearly about your designs. Switching gears… I love the coziness of home offices and studios, and I imagine yous practice too. Where, in your home, is your office / studio located?

My studio is the second bedroom in the dorsum of a ii-bedroom garden flat in Brooklyn Heights. Our landlord owns & lives in the three floors of the brick townhome above. It was built in 1850 & she is merely the tertiary possessor!

-What take you found to be the best time of day (or night) to get work done?

Oooohhh"¦depends on the work, but I am probably at my most productive just afterwards lunch. At that point I have checked all my email, done any accounting or household chores & have no restrictions!

-Always easier to work when you lot've charged upwards your brain with a little food, huh? Sounds similar you lot have a schedule down pat. How long take you been pursuing piece of work equally a designer and card shop owner?

My K.Derailed shop started in Nov 2009, though it was non my start Etsy shop effort. I used to be 910 Studio "" same shop concept, dissimilar proper noun. I started 910 ane 24-hour interval at piece of work when I was having the worst day in the globe "" the kind of mean solar day that led to my leaving the visitor in May 2009. Subsequently I got married a few months subsequently, I had more than time to think near what I wanted to practise. Since I have this opportunity due to my husbands honey & support, I wanted my store name to reflect that. So! Now Im K. Batty Design & Stationery. Its a two-prong approach – freelancing as a graphic designer/art director & running my Etsy shop.

-What has been your most exciting or noteworthy issue regarding your work recently that you interpret as a success?

LOTS of my business has come from word-of-mouth. It is unbelievably gratifying to know that my piece of work satisfies my customers to the signal that they are sending their friends, family unit & colleagues to me. I really had a client similar the business cards I made for him And then much, that he insisted I put my website somewhere on them so people could discover me.

Also, its a success that my friends & family read my blog "" and not just because they love me. They actually expect frontwards to the content!

-And ane last question for you. I am all well-nigh online marketing. And so can you tell me what ways you promote yourself and your work online?

My web log, Facebook, & twitter serve 2 purposes. ane. To let my potential customers get to know ME, non always my piece of work 2. To drive people to my Etsy shop. Ill explicate:

The G. Batty blog is pretty much dwelling house base. There, I talk about design that I like, things I think are pretty, electric current projects. This year I started a weekly post called Cards of the Week, to highlight paper products from around the web that I similar. I used FB & Twitter to drive people to the web log. I also post on FB & twitter when I upload new items to Etsy or desire to phone call attending to a specific item (for instance, I have Mothers Day cards going up soon & some stationery that would make a great gift for Mom"¦)

Only I endeavour non to just post nigh newspaper & stationery all the time. Otherwise, I call up people outset to melody information technology out. My personality really helps sell my work, so I try first & foremost to let that be what I show the most on my blog, FB & twitter. There are LOTS of talented designers doing the same thing that I am "" selling cards online. Making a personal connection with customers, dialoging with them, letting my personality smoothen thru, hopefully, can help set me autonomously from the rest of the fray.
